Dutasteride belongs to the class of 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, which are used to manage conditions caused by excess dihydrotestosterone (DHT), particularly benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Mechanism of Action:
Dutasteride works by inhibiting both type 1 and type 2 isoforms of the 5-alpha reductase enzyme, which is responsible for converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Since DHT is a key factor in prostate enlargement, reducing its levels leads to a gradual decrease in prostate size, alleviating urinary symptoms and improving urine flow. This action also helps lower the risk of acute urinary retention and the need for prostate surgery.

Indications:
Dutasteride is mainly prescribed for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate. It is often used in combination with alpha-blockers such as tamsulosin for enhanced symptom relief. Additionally, it has been studied for its potential use in treating male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia), though it is not officially approved for that indication.

Dosage Form:
Available in oral capsule form, typically in a strength of 0.5 mg per capsule, taken once daily with or without food.

Typical Dosage:
The usual recommended dose for BPH treatment is 0.5 mg daily. It may take three to six months for significant symptom relief, as the prostate gradually shrinks over time. Long-term therapy may be required to maintain benefits.
