Pharmacological Class:
Clomiphene belongs to the class of drugs known as selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs). While SERMs are primarily used to treat conditions like breast cancer and osteoporosis, Clomiphene’s unique properties make it effective for inducing ovulation in women experiencing infertility, especially due to conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
Mechanism of Action:
Clomiphene works by binding to estrogen receptors in the hypothalamus, a key part of the brain responsible for regulating hormonal balance. This binding leads the hypothalamus to detect lower estrogen levels than are actually present, which causes the release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). GnRH stimulates the pituitary gland to release higher levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). FSH encourages the growth and maturation of ovarian follicles, and LH triggers ovulation, the release of an egg from the ovary. Clomiphene also has anti-estrogenic effects on the ovaries, preventing negative feedback from estrogen and allowing for better follicular development.
Indications:
Clomiphene 50MG is primarily indicated for women who have difficulty ovulating. It is commonly used in cases of anovulatory infertility, especially in women with conditions like PCOS. Clomiphene is generally prescribed when ovulation does not occur regularly or is absent, leading to difficulty in conceiving. In some cases, Clomiphene may also be used for male infertility, although this is less common.
Dosage Form:
Clomiphene 50MG is available in oral tablet form. The typical starting dose is 50MG per day, taken for five consecutive days at the beginning of the menstrual cycle. The dosage may be adjusted based on the patient’s response, and the dose can be increased to 100MG or 150MG if ovulation does not occur with the initial dose.
Typical Dosage:
The usual starting dose of Clomiphene is 50MG per day for five days, beginning on the 5th day of the menstrual cycle. If the first treatment cycle does not result in ovulation, the dose may be increased to 100MG or 150MG in subsequent cycles. Clomiphene is typically taken for up to three to six cycles, after which treatment may be reassessed depending on the outcome and response to therapy.
